This week we got a floral order for an Indian luncheon.I wanted to create arrangements that reflect the rich hues of Indian culture. I became more familiar with this rich and diverse culture through my youngest daughter’s travel stories. She spent a little bit of time traveling throughout India last year and she shared with me a lot of stories and pictures. These photos and stories allowed me to vicariously travel through this colorful country with her.Her photos had so many vibrant hues of orange, pink and saffron in them that the people and things in the pictures seemed to come to life for me. Because of this, I wanted to create very lively arrangements that reflected what I saw through her travels.
This is the most significant time in the flower business. In the last week we have been busy taking orders and preparing arrangements for our clients. What our clients don't see when they get these lovely arrangements is all the people who made this happen. These flowers are handled with care from the growers to our studio until they are presented to the people who are loved by their partners, friends and family. We feel very fortunate to be able to contribute in this process. We wish you a Happy Valentine's Day!
I am very excited about our Valentine's Day promotion. We are offering a dozen roses with a box of chocolate for $49.50! All you have to do is order by February 8th to get this great deal. We will deliver this special for free to your Valentine's office.
The end of 2009 went by in a flash. I was busy with decorating my clients' businesses for the holidays and creating beautiful gift baskets for them. I also managed to have some time to celebrate my birthday and the holidays with my grandkids in Tahoe.
Now I am back and ready to embrace 2010 as it brings many occasions to celebrate with beautiful flowers. Because the winter months do not give us the opportunity to incorporate fresh local flowers in our designs, we decided not to pick a flower of the month for January but instead pick not riped green raspberries as shown in the arrangements below. The raspberries are from our neighbor state farms in Oregon.
These lovely arrangements were made for a corporate event at Hampton Inn Hotel in San Francisco. We chose green and white flowers and greens to reflect the winter colors we see in nature.

Last week I decorated Amber India Restaurant for the holidays. I wanted the holiday decorations to reflect the orange-yellow hues of the existing decor and the spicy personality of the restaurant. Because of this I picked amber hues for the metal star and circle decorations hanging from a bronze colored tree stem. I also added some fake snow mixed with anise stars and pines to the potted poinsettia vases. I love how the decor turned out. If you are around Yerba Buena gardens this holiday season, be sure to stop by to see the decorations and taste the delicious Indian food.
The first day after Thanksgiving is a big shopping day for most people. I know a lot of people go to bed Thanksgiving night anticipating the big sales they are going to get on Black Friday. I get excited for Black Friday for another reason. The day after Thanksgiving is when we start decorating our client's offices, restuarants and hotels for the holidays. While everyone was getting up early to conquer their shopping lists, I got up early to start my Christmas decorations. I started making one out of the six wreaths I am designing for a local office. The office has a lot of blue and green panels so I am decorating the wreaths with similar colors. I had a lot of fun this morning with the wreaths.
Every year my family and I celebrate Thanksgiving at my sister's house. While she makes all the food, I always bring the bouquet. This year I created a more traditional centerpiece to decorate the feast my sister made. It was a lovely day. I hope you had a wonderful day with your loved ones as well.
I made this Fall arrangement today with persimmons. I've been using a lot of persimmons in my arrangements lately because they look like little pumpkins. This one is for a Thanksgiving dinner party.
I took a short break from work for an ankle surgery and now I am back getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday celebrations. I am still walking with crutches but I am doing a lot better. It was a delight today working with all these vibrant fall flowers. I promise to update my blog more now that I am feeling better.
Despite the rain today, we had a wonderful day designing the flowers for a wedding at the Presidio Golf Course. Because the theme was a fall wonderland, I used a lot of orange and brown colors throughout all the arrangements.
Our clients always ask us what type of flowers they should send for certain occasions. We specifically get a lot of questions from people regarding what is appropriate to send to their co-workers. Recently, a gentleman wanted to order flowers for a colleague who got promoted and he wanted to send her something feminine but nothing that would give the wrong impression. I always recommend keeping it simple by choosing white flowers, like roses, with greens. An arrangement like the above does not communicate any strong emotion. To help you with your flowers choices, I did some internet research and found this guide from Teleflora on the meaning of different flowers. However, remember as long as something comes genuinely from the heart, you will make someone happy.
My nephew and his wife are celebrating their love with a Buddhist ceremony. We wanted to create a bouquet that she could carry the whole night as a hostess and a bride. I decided to design a hand wrist corsage with phalaenopsis orchids that would easily flow with the theme of their party.
The biggest news in my family this month is that my grandson has started kindergarten. He is very proud of the fact that he has to go to school all day, everyday, like how his mommy and daddy go to work. He loves telling us all about his new friends, teachers and class activities and we love hearing every detail. When he told me that it's his teacher’s birthday this week, I knew I had to create something special for him to give her.
Given that Apples are supposed to be the customary giftto give to teachers, it seemed imperative that I create an apple bouquet. The apple vase was easy. I carved a big apple to make a vase. I then filled it with some of my favorite flowers and a few vegetables to go with the fruit base. In spirit of the back to school season, I wanted to share this bouquet incase you wanted to give your favorite teacher an apple.
September is usually a hot month in San Francisco. This is when we finally feel the warmth of summer. In celebration of the heat, I am picking Succulent flowers as my September flower of the month. Succulent flowers are part of the cactus family. Because of their cactus roots, they can last long and take the heat. To soften this bouquet a bit, I got creative and added a few things from my fridge. I hid some broccoli, green beans, mushroom and fresh mints amongst the deep purple flowers. The mints added a nice aroma to the otherwise fragrance-free flowers. Check out the first arrangement in mydesign portfolio for another example of a Succulent floral arrangement.

Today I had the pleasure of creating beautiful organic arrangements for Carolyn's wedding at the Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco. My daughter came along with me to document the event through photos and a video. Here is a collage of the wedding floral arrangements. She's also editing a video of me creating the floral arrangments. I took a sneak peak of the film and I have to admit that I come across quiet grumpy on film. I told her I will be a friendlier floral hostess the next time we film an event.
I am picking the sunflower for my August flower because we can all use a little more sunshine in our summer days. Especially, living in San Francisco, we've seen very little sun this summer and the sunflower can help us attract the sun. A well-known sunflower characteristic is that the flowering heads track the sun's movement, a phenomenon known as heliotropism. The faces of most sunflowers are turned towards the east. Over the course of the day, they follow the sun from east to west, while at night they return to an eastward orientation. A sunflower bouquette can bring the warmth of the sun indoors and brighten any overcast San Francisco day.

If there was a flower that knew the meaning of summer, it is the Dahlia. Its bubblyenergy and beauty make it the quintessential summer flower. Because of this, I have picked the Dahlia as my July flower.
While its colors are limited to the warm ranges of red, orange, yellow, pink and white, its flowers come in a dizzying array of shapes and sizes. Dahlias bloom from mid summer all the way up to fall and can brighten any cold room up with their vibrant colors and full presence. You can view my design portfolio for more examples of floral arrangements with Dahlias. On Friday, I had a very special wedding at the Green Room, located in San Franciso's Veterans Building. The wedding was special to me because I've had the pleasure of seeing the bride grow up. This and the fact that she herself is an artist, made it very important to me to capture her floral vision. We wanted the flowers to bring together the decorations and make the room warm. Because of this we chose a variety of yellow orchids to fill the room with magical golden rays. We literally turned the Green Room yellow!
